ABOUT ME

I am born and brought-up in a remote village of Kumaun Himalayas. I took my primary and a major part of secondary education in my village. Prior to moving to Germany for my PhD, I studied Physics in my masters at Kumaun University Nainital at Almora campus and then later (for another masters) I studied Seismology at IIT Kharagpur from 2008-2010. I obtained my PhD from University of Potsdam, Germany in Geophysics in 2016. The six years I spent in Potsdam for my PhD and then subsequently for my first postdoc have been very enriching (personally) and have played important role in shaping my academic career.

I broadly study the strong shaking (motion) effects generated by earthquakes. I use the data (seismograms) recorded for the past earthquakes to study different characteristics of the shaking that is produced at a given location. Such studies then subsequently lead to developing models, which in turn are used for future prediction of shaking. This is of great importance in engineering design of structures such as dams, bridges and other critical facilities. In addition to my research, I have a passion for teaching and travelling. I like to read autobiographies, memoirs and books related to history.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Engineering Seismology and Seismic Hazard

  • Site-specific (critical facility) seismic hazard analysis.

  • Low probability but high consequences seismic hazard analysis (i.e., critical facility hazard ).

  • Adjusting ground motion models to low-to-moderate seismicity areas.

  • Ground motion models and local site-effects.

  • Regional variations in source, path and site properties of strong ground motion.

  • Calibrating and modelling basin and topographic effects on strong ground-shaking.
